About Pregnancy Massage
Pregnancy Massage (also known as prenatal massage) is a specially adapted 60-minute treatment designed to address the unique physical and emotional needs of expectant mothers. Pregnancy brings tremendous changes to the body — shifting centre of gravity, increased blood volume, hormonal fluctuations, and growing pressure on muscles and joints — and this gentle, expert treatment provides safe and effective relief.
Safety is our highest priority. This treatment is available from the second trimester onwards (after week 13). Before the session, our therapist will discuss your current stage of pregnancy, any complications or concerns, and areas of particular discomfort. Certain pressure points and essential oils that can stimulate uterine contractions are strictly avoided. We use only pregnancy-safe, hypoallergenic massage oils.
Positioning is crucial for comfort and safety. We use a specially designed pregnancy pillow system that allows you to lie comfortably on your side, with full support for your abdomen, back, and legs. The side-lying position is recommended by medical professionals as the safest massage position during pregnancy, as it avoids pressure on the vena cava (the major vein returning blood to the heart).
The massage technique uses gentle to moderate pressure, focusing on the areas most affected during pregnancy. The lower back receives careful attention — as the belly grows, the lumbar spine curves more dramatically, placing enormous strain on the erector spinae and quadratus lumborum muscles. The therapist uses soothing effleurage and gentle kneading to relieve this chronic ache. The legs and feet, which bear increasing weight and often swell due to fluid retention, are treated with light lymphatic drainage techniques to reduce edema and improve circulation. The shoulders and neck, which compensate for the changed posture, are gently released of tension.
Benefits backed by research include: significant reduction in back and pelvic pain, decreased leg and ankle swelling (edema), improved sleep quality (often disrupted during pregnancy), reduced anxiety and stress hormones (cortisol), elevation of mood-enhancing hormones (serotonin and dopamine), relief from sciatic nerve pain, reduced muscle cramps, and improved circulation for both mother and baby.
Studies have shown that regular prenatal massage can also contribute to shorter, less complicated labour and healthier birth outcomes. Many of our expectant guests make pregnancy massage a regular part of their prenatal care routine.
Please note: We require clearance from your healthcare provider if you have a high-risk pregnancy, history of pre-term labour, pre-eclampsia, or placental complications. Our therapists are trained in prenatal massage safety and will ensure your comfort and well-being throughout the entire session.
